I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there promptly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
