I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, remove any significant items, clean up any water, and put a bucket to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
